Associations Making a Difference around the Globe Recognized with Better World Awards
June 15, 2010

WASHINGTON—The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry were recently recognized with the 2010 Associations Make a Better World Award. Introduced in 2002, the Awards recognize association programs, projects and activities that make a significant contribution to society and economies around the world, in two categories: U.S./Developed Nations and Developing Nations. Representatives from each of the overall award-winning associations will receive the Award at ASAE & The Center’s 2010 Annual Meeting & Exposition, August 21-24 in Los Angeles.

“The reach of the association community goes far beyond the U.S. borders, with many internationally-based associations making significant contributions to local communities around the world,” said ASAE & The Center President and CEO John H. Graham IV, CAE. “ASAE & The Center is proud to recognize the social, economic and advocacy contributions of associations working internationally. We hope to raise awareness of the wide impact of our community worldwide.”

This year, the following organizations were selected to receive the Award:

Soroptimist International of the Americas
Program: Soroptimist Disaster Grants for Women and Girls

Developing Nation Category

Overall Winner

Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Program: Cebu Business Month
Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines

Honorable Mention

Muntinlupa Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Program:  Community Relations Program
Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila, Philippines


This year, Betsy Bassan, president of the Society for International Development Board of Directors and senior vice president at Chemonics International, joined the selection committee as a guest judge. Bassan is a development planner and senior management specialist with 25 years of experience designing and managing development activities across a broad array of technical areas and geographic regions. Her sector experience includes health, private sector development, environment, democracy/governance and PVO/NGO development, with regional experience in Europe and Eurasia, Middle East and Africa. She served as project director for a major USAID initiative to increase PVO/NGO capacity in family planning, reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS and to provide services through networks.

Judging is based on five elements in the areas of Impact, Innovation, Involvement, Resource utilization and Sustainability.
